Another foggy Christmas
I got to thinking, since I've been back in Kansas, I have yet to have a Christmas season where I am feeling good and am able to fully enjoy all the excitement of the season. I was starting to feel sorry for myself. Then, as happens a lot, God reminded me that the world doesn't revolve around me. I love the Christmas season; lights, hot cocoa, carols, the hope of snow, picking out a Christmas tree, seeing and loving on family and friends. JESUS. Nothing else really matters.
It doesn't have to be December. Life is always going to have some fog, sometimes a lot thicker than others. But there's always The Good News that shines enough light, so that we can see clearly enough to keep going. JESUS.
Two years ago in December, I was extremely nauseated. Our second baby was on it's way. Last year I had strep throat twice, with a mono diagnosis just around the corner. This year, I'm throwing up again. So grateful that it means there's another baby on it's way.
So, it's another foggy Christmas. And as I think about our own good news of baby #3, I am humbled by The Good News. JESUS. My Savior and hope amidst the fog.
"And an angel of the Lord suddenly stood before them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them; and they were terribly frightened. But the angel said to them, 'Do not be afraid; for behold, I bring you good news of great joy which will be for all the people; for today in the city of David there has been born for you a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.'" Luke 2:9-11

Zane & Company
We've had a visitor this week. Zane's good friend Mindy was able to spend some special time with us this week. We have been very thankful for this week, because Mindy is getting ready to move. Here's just a little bit of the fun that was had!
I love my...
It rained this week. We pulled out the raincoat that Gemma got for Christmas last year. It fits perfectly this year and Gemma thinks it's wonderful. In fact, the day we got out in the rain, we couldn't take the coat off or she would start crying. And here you will see, she brought it to me to put on before she ate breakfast...

Zane never did this.

Zane never did this.
Daily Bread
We're teaching our children that the Bible is our daily bread, but Gemma is taking it very literally right now. The child wants bread at EVERY meal...and inbetween.

Narrowness
"The latin word for anxiety is angustia, which literally means "narrowness." It seems that every time I attempt to fit God and His ways into the small and narrow box of how I think things ought to be, the result is anxiety and doubt. But I've learned that when I authentically confess my doubts before Him, faith begins to emerge right alongside those doubts. And in time a new and greater belief that is anchored in who God really is breaks out of that puny little box, shattering the narrowness of my doubts." Scott Larson - a place for skeptics

Wicked
My sister in-luv and I entered in the "Wicked" lottery last night, hoping for a $25 ticket to see this fun musical. Things did not go as planned, as you can see...
So...grandparents were already graciously watching our kiddos, so Bryce and I had an impromptu date night. We had a nice dinner at Granite City and then hung out at Borders for a while. It was lots of fun!
We headed back to pick up the wee ones and found Zane had done some work on Gpa's hair. Speaking of wicked... :-)

Happy Blogaversary!
I've been blogging for a year!
It's time for a roll call.
If you read my silly little blog, leave a comment or just your name (mom, no one will think your comment is dumb), so I know who is reading out there.
See, I told you I need affirmation (see previous post)!

Mystery of the Mums
Here is the mum that our sweet neighbor friend gave us. I have cared for it regularly, watering and moving it around as needed due to wind or sun. Maybe you can't see from this picture, but it's barely alive.

And here is the mum in the front of our house that I have never watered. We've lived here over 2 years and I have not watered it once. It is completely neglected and absolutely beautiful.

Thank you God for this amazing Autumn gift. We know that is truly from you!

100th Post!
I've read on other blogs that apparently it is tradition to type 100 things about yourself on your 100th posting. This is a rather overwhelming thought for me, especially this week. Maybe someday I will get to that, but for now, I leave you with these super cute pics....and maybe one thing about me you might not know....I despise unpacking. Thus, my suitcase has been sitting out for a week now, from going on a Mom's Retreat. Gemma has found a new favorite spot to play!

Happy 5th Birthday Zane!
Our Zane turned 5 on the 10th and the following day we celebrated with a Picnic Party. The weather was not quite appropriate for an outdoor picnic at 45 degrees, so we were thankful to have use of the church's gym for the evening.

We even found some bugs to make the picnic complete.

We had hot dogs, chips, ants on a log, juice & ant hill cupcakes. Yum!

What's in a grandparent's name?
We have gotten many questions when Zane mentions his grandparents by their endearing names. They don't seem strange to us, but we also know how those names came about. So, I thought I would share a little insight into our family naming...
Bryce's parents:
G'pa & G'ma
I think that flows very nicely together. It could be that you first think of a new rapping duo perhaps? But we think of two very generous, loving, selfless people that we are so thankful to be going through life with. One of the first gifts they gave Zane, (I can't remember if it was a book or a card) there was not a lot of room to sign on it and they shortened their signature to G'pa & G'ma. They didn't have grandparent names yet and so it stuck.
My parents:
Gramps & Mama Frita
Now, I realize if you were confused by the first set, you are really confused now. Gramps is a great grandfather name. I think my dad came up with that himself and I think it fits him perfectly. The name Gramps makes me think of a loving, patient, always there for you kind of grandfather and that's exactly what he is. I'm leaving you in suspense about Mama Frita. ;-) I took three years of spanish during high school. This is where it began. My greatest memory of my teenage & junior college years, is that when I came home from school, my Mom was always there. I never wondered about what to do with my afternoons. I knew I'd be chatting with Mom about my day, either snuggled on the couch, out for a fun snack or while making dinner together. And somewhere along the road my endearing name for her became Mama Frita Rita Rosita Conchita. So it has actually shortened itself down quite a bit! It sounds a little silly, but to me that name is full of love and memories. I love that my own children can carry that on.
My grandparents' endearing names are Pop & Gram and Papa & Nana. I also had a Grannie for many years. Bryce has a Grampy, and a Grammy waiting for us in heaven. He also had a Grandpa and Grandma. All of whom have given us a humbling Christian legacy.

Dirt Cups
For AWANA this week I made dirt cups for snack time. They have been talking about creation and their verse this week was "He made everything beautiful" Ecclesiastes 3:11

This was such a fun recipe! I happened upon it, while searching online earlier this week. Now I can't find where it was, so I'm sorry to say, I can't give credit where credit is due. The cups are actually chocolate chip cookies. You use refrigerated chocolate chip cookie dough. Smash it into a cupcake pan and bake them the noted time. When they first come out of the oven you need to poke them with a spoon or something to make them fall. After they cool, they come right out of the pan. You then fill the cups with chocolate pudding. Top with crushed Oreos and a gummy worm. I must say they looked fun and were delicious too.

An interview with Mom
While I was cooking dinner yesterday, Zane asked if he could help. It just wasn't possible this time, with what I was doing, so I turned him down. He then asked if he could interview me while I was cooking. I said, "Sure!" I started jotting notes down on a pad after we got into it, because it was getting pretty entertaining. Maybe you'll enjoy it too...

Lots of Love
You can't really make out these army men's faces in this picture, but they are scowling and appear about as unfriendly as plastically possible. You must understand this to get the full effect of this story...
This morning Gemma and I were enjoying our girl bonding time while Zane was at preschool. We like to read books and play with her baby dolls during this time. As was expected, she brought me a book as soon as the boys headed out the door. We read "My Speedy Turtle" about 10 times. When she had had her fill of this story, she held her arms just right and began to rock them back and forth, as though rocking a baby. This is the sign that it is baby doll time. I smiled and told her to go get one of her babies.
She returned with the army guys. I'm not sure why. This has not happened before. It could be that they were first available on her trip to her bedroom. Or it could be, she just had an uninterrupted chance to play with these army men, whom are usually off limits when Zane is home. Whatever the case, she gave one to me and she kept one for herself. She rocked the little army man, gave him kisses, pointed out his eyes, nose and mouth, and tickled his belly. Then traded me, to love on the other little army man. I was having trouble keeping a straight face.
I'm so used to seeing these army men thrown in all directions with many war time sound effects. I have to think these little army men enjoyed getting a little love this morning.
Kansas State Fair
We love the fair. We are loyal to our state fair and were loyal to the Texas State Fair when we were Texans. Both lots of fun. It's a combination of the outdoors, unlimited fried food and fun day together as a family that the fair provides that brings us much excitement!
We got our spot early before the pig races began. We wanted to be able to see everything.
Pig racing in action. Our pig actually won the big race at the end!

One of Zane's highlights was the Slush Factory. You could try a combination of flavors. He went with orange, banana & blue raspberry.

Here is one of the many times Gemma got excited about seeing animals. That was definitely her favorite part! We heard a lot of "oooh" and "Look".

Another highlight for Zane was seeing a real race car. The sun was in his eyes, thus the reason for the hands over his face. It wasn't that he was just overcome with emotion at the sight of the car. :-)
And sadly, I don't have a picture of my highlight....Fried Oreos. I'm a little embarrassed to share with you how much I enjoyed them. But being the health nut that I am, I enjoyed every morsel. Oreos dipped in funnel cake batter, fried and dusted with powdered sugar. I don't even know what else to say.
Crazy Sock Night
Sometime during this month that has flown by, was Crazy Sock Night at AWANA. Here is my little man modeling them. He raided my sock drawer to find these fun accessories.

15 Months
Gemma had her 15 month check up today. It seems we officially have a toddler on our hands. What happened to the baby? It does go by fast. Gemma seems to be growing up just right.
Here are the stats...
Weight: 22 lbs (38%)
Height: 30 3/8 inches (35%)
Head circumference: 18.25 (64%)
I obviously assume her head is a little larger in comparison to the other stats due to her large brain. She is brilliant! ;-)
We all went as a family to the appt. While we were there, we discovered the flu shots were available and so we all got one, much to Zane's dismay. He did great though and even got to pick a special prize out of the treasure chest.

Adventures in raising a 1 year old.
So, I folded clothes today. I placed them neatly back in the laundry basket to be distributed to the appropriate room. Here lies the mistake. I then headed to the kitchen to clean up the bowls from my cabinet that had been dispersed throughout the kitchen floor. This is when I hear crying from the living room. Not serious crying, just frustrated whining type crying. Here is what I find. She has dumped my neatly folded clothes and arranged them ever so nicely. Then placed herself in the laundry basket and got stuck. I considered not helping...but she's pretty cute...so I did.
Then there was this afternoon. Zane and I are coloring together at the table...rather enjoying ourselves. I glance over to check on Gemma who was playing on the floor next to us. She seems to be chewing. Not normally an issue, as she commonly snacks on the debris under the table. Although, this time the chewing is occurring with crayons in hand. With a little concern, I shove my finger in her mouth and this is what I find...

***Warning*** Leave your 1 year old alone at your own risk.

What to do about a grumpy little sister
Here's our recent dilemma...
Gemma gets pretty testy with her well intentioned (well, most of the time) brother. For instance, this morning Zane was trying to take something from Gemma that she was not supposed to have. He went over to her and grabbed it from her. She screamed at him and tried to pinch his arm. Zane in turn looked at his Dad, in dismay, like, I'm just trying to help?!
So, Dad and I offer up some advice...
Bryce says, "Zane, thank you for trying to help, but let Mommy or Daddy take things away from her. If it's an emergency, tell her 'no no, Gemma' (this is what we say to her) and gently take the item away."
I say, "or Zane, offer her a toy in exchange for the item you are taking from her, and then she won't get so mad, because you're giving her something else to play with."
Zane stops to contemplate all of the given options.
He then very seriously says, "or we could just put her outside."
Laughter ensues. Admittedly, I have thought of this option. However, this is not very realistic. So, I think we'll keep working on this one. :-)

1st Day of School
The day has finally arrived. We, well I guess just Zane, has been ready to go for weeks. The beginning of another school year. He was extra excited this morning about his new full size backpack. Here he is, ready to roll.

And here's the backpack. It has boot prints on it.
Here are the pics from his first day of preschool last year. I can't believe how little he looks! My how things change in a short amount of time.
